Prairie Rose Suffolks has a unique approach to raising purebred Suffolks based on precision breeding practices through extensive and systematic research efforts.
My husband, Dan, and I both have our own sheep and livestock interests respectively known as Prairie Rose Suffolks and Two Bar L Livestock where we often share ideas and co-mingle genetics. We both graduated from college with Range Science, Range Management and Natural Resources Degrees. I co-managed the university’s Sheep and Goat facility while completing my studies. I really enjoyed working with the sheep and this is more or less where my interest in sheep began and eventually developed into a lifelong passion.
During this time, I also was on a work study program with the U. S. Forest Service in Idaho, where I was a Range Conservationist and was tasked with managing livestock grazing and utilization on hundreds of thousands of acres of sheep and cattle allotments and with working with the permittees.
After getting married, we started working at the U.S. Sheep Experiment Station in Dubois, Idaho, 40+ years ago where I worked in the sheep operation and Dan, worked in range and natural resource research. We were exposed to several different breeds at the station but the Suffolk really impressed me with their outstanding growth and superior carcass attributes.
My first sheep flock consisted of some Targhee-Suffolk X ewes that came from the sheep station. We started a direct Farm to Table business selling farm fresh lamb. We added registered Suffolk rams to the mix and were impressed by the outstanding growth in the lambs and the superior carcass traits that we saw from using the Suffolk rams.
Because of the superior performance of those original Suffolk rams, I eventually phased out the crossbred ewes completely and moved to a purebred, registered Suffolk flock selling seed stock … stud bucks, premium ewes, range ram sires and range/terminal rams across the country and into Canada.
Breeding goals
We strive to maintain a strong, productive foundational base to produce well made, balanced, structurally correct sheep with mass, growth, longevity, and “do-ability” for the commercial and range producer and purebred breeder alike within a variety of management systems.
"Our favorite part of the Idaho Ram Sale is connecting with other breeders and producers."
