Ike Maxwell describes his Suffolk operation by saying, “It all began around 40 years ago with Mama Sheep. When my wonderful children decided to join FFA and 4-H, we were gifted our first ewe—Mama Sheep. She wasn’t your typical Suffolk with a strong frame or show-ring appeal, but what she lacked in looks, she more than made up for in production. Year after year, she raised flashy, vigorous lambs that caught everyone’s attention. Mama Sheep opened our eyes to the potential of the Suffolk breed and inspired us to be part of its improvement. Ever since, I’ve been dedicated to raising Suffolks.”
Breeding goals
Maxwell emphasizes in raising robust, structurally sound, fast-growing, large-framed Suffolks that contribute to the improvement and preservation of the Suffolk breed. This mindset when producing yearling rams sets the tone for a successful sheep operation.
"I value the camaraderie shared among fellow producers and the outstanding quality of rams offered at the sale. I also appreciate the well-organized efforts of the sale committee and their ongoing commitment to improving the event each year"
When asked about the Idaho State Ram sale, Maxwell says the auction is “Well organized, short duration sale, no frill, down to earth. I enjoy the camaraderie that the producers bring and outstanding rams that are sold in the sale.”
